about

The Wise Bloods take their gloves off in 2023. The band are set to release a new body of work consisting of four original songs expressed in modern iterations of classic reggae styles- Steppas, Rockers and rocksteady. The series of releases will ultimately culminate into a 12 track Vinyl release including dubs, remixes and re-release Riddims with special guest features. Although each song release will be staggered across 2023 along with remixes and dubs, all will come under the album title and artistic concept, 'Eye Out For The Devil".
'Eye out for the devil' comes from the project's title track and is symbolic of striving to avoid being caught up within the evil of humanity.
The title track meaning is explained by lead singer Jesse James, ‘To keep an eye out for the devil is to avoid the pitfalls set by the evils and badness in the world, by first having awareness and control of the weakness and badness in oneself. For it is the weakness in the self, that makes an individual vulnerable to bad wills and the trappings of this Babylon system’

What is different about this project?
“Everything! Firstly, the whole approach to our music has changed. I'm no longer trying to make music I think I should be making. Each song is a direct authentic expression of my human experience, and then made to best communicate the emotion, scene or message of that experience in the form of reggae music...One thing that is greatly improving the process is that the band are more directly involved in the process of music creation and its evolution at an earlier stage. The essence and vibe of each player is more placed in the music's development.”
...Another exciting aspect of 'Eye Out For The Devil' is our collaboration with engineer and creative mind, Jaime Zugasti. We’ve recorded the main foundations of the music with Zugasti at the legendary BBMC studios. That mixing of creative energies is giving the music a whole new life of its own. Zugasti, after finalising the general levels of the mix, has cut each mix live from his desk, so there is a whole other live and creative aspect to the music
just through his input. On top of that each track is having its own dub mix cut from the same desk. This is happening in the same studio where legends have recorded classics. Placing our music in this context and process is making it feel alot more like it is taking part in the ongoing history, legacy and culture of Reggae music.
... A clear sense of meaning and purpose is another thing I’m proud of. From the title track, down to each song, there are clear themes and purpose running through.
In addition to ‘Eye Out For The Devil’, there is Love this pain, which is about both addictions and relationship anxiety; It's about attachment to what might not be good for us. London Summer Loving is a depiction of a typical hazy summer day in London and that vibe you get from getting out on a sunny day. It's also subtly about the rise in violence and knife crime in London during summer, but rather than focus on it, it's more about transcending the ill nature of the city and focusing on the positive aspects of our multi- cultural living and communities. It's more about loving, focusing on manifesting the positive and just allowing ourselves to enjoy what the summer brings. The song is an encouragement to come together and unify and communicate in a real way, rather than beefing and warring with our neighbours. ‘Baby You Need Me’ is a modern take of an old school love song typical of the rocksteady or ska era. There are strong influences of blues and soul, with the theme of wanting to win over a lover, who's still playing the field because their mind is not so made up.
